Hillary and Dan: Baltimore Engagement Photography

Hillary and Dan: Awesome Baltimore Engagement Photos

Today I want to introduce you to the coolest couple ever.  (I’m not even exaggerating.)  This is Hillary and Dan, and they’re going to be married next fall.  And then they’re going to have the Best. Party.  Ever.  I know this is true because Dan told me so.  Oh, and because I spent a fantastic day with them and I totally saw how they roll.  These two really know how to make a guest feel special.  From the moment they picked me up at the airport until they dropped me off (exhausted and grinning) in the afternoon, they made sure that I was having fun.  And I think it shows in the photos.  Take a look for yourself.  Oh, and be sure to read their story.  It’s good stuff.

How did you meet?

Dan: We met through mutual friends when we were out at a bar for karaoke night. Funny thing about us meeting at a bar… neither of us drink alcohol. I remember Hillary standing out to me because she walked into the room with a Starbuck’s drink. I was like “hmm…” and then she sat down at the far end of the table with a friend of mine. The rest is history.

Hillary: I was just there to hang out with friends, since getting me to sing in public is nearly impossible. I noticed Dan every time he got up to sing and rocked the place with his voice. We were sitting at the same long table and through some musical chairs, he ended up sitting next to me for a while. We talked for a bit and he suggested that we hang out sometime. Within a few days, we had our first date.

What was dating like?

Dan: A lot like the way normal people date… only awesome-er!
On a more serious note, I think that together we stood up to our share of challenges while we were dating and every time we faced one we grew stronger as a couple as we skipped backwards over it while high-fiving.

Hillary: Dan’s answer pretty much sums it up! We fell in love early on and have developed a true partnership over the last five years. We had a lot of fun times during our dating years and also did a lot of growing up. The one thing that never changed was our respect and support for one another that allowed us to grow into the people and couple that we are today.

Describe your proposal.

Dan: I tell this story too much…I think I’ll make Hill tell it this time.

Hillary: A few days after Dan finished school and earned his degree that he had been working towards for years (something he had long said he wanted to accomplish before getting married), we went to dinner to celebrate at the restaurant where we had our first date. Oddly, no red flags went off in my dense head at this point. Dan had gotten some tattoo work done that day–the phonograph you might notice in some of the pictures–and he had a long-sleeved shirt on to cover the bandage. After we finished eating, he went to the bathroom to remove the bandage. When he came back, he began to show me the new tattoo. When I said that it looked good, he replied with “If you like this one, you should see what I had done on the other arm.” He pulled back his other sleeve and on that arm, in a tattoo script, were the words “Hillary, will you marry me?” He dropped to his knee and proposed and all I said was “of course!” followed promptly by “that tattoo isn’t real, is it?!” The proposal tattoo was just temporary, of course. I’ve grown to love his real tattoos, though. Especially the one that says “the day is young.” It’s actually a line from one of his songs, and it’s a nice daily reminder that there is always time to make a positive impact on the world or to follow your dreams.

How would you describe your relationship?

Dan: Our relationship is the healthiest thing in my life. We love one another very much and I think that we compliment each other well. Like a true team we have learned to work together, utilizing each other’s strengths. Most importantly we are always there for one another.

Hillary:  Aside from having grown to be best friends and each other’s “better half,” I think our relationship is most special because of the way we balance each other.  Dan always makes me laugh when I am down, and I try to do the same for him. He motivates me to be more ambitious and creative and I remind him to slow down and enjoy life. We’re constantly learning new things from each other. My favorite part of our relationship is the laughter that we share every day. Probably because we have the same goofy sense of humor.

Whats your wedding going to be like?

Dan: Our wedding is going to be a big party. We will settle for nothing less than legen… (wait for it)…bring your dancing shoes, youre gonna need them….DARY!

Hillary:  Hopefully like an awesome party that nobody wants to end! It definitely has a more traditional structure, but we are working hard to make sure the day is full of details and personality. We want it to be very personal and a reflection of the things that are important to us both as individuals and as a couple. We’ve chosen vendors that highlight the things most important to us, including an awesome live band since Dan is a musician and the world’s greatest photographer since photography is my favorite hobby. Also, we think our friends and family are amazing and we know that they will infuse the day with energy and even more love. And that’s all we can ask for—for everyone to help us celebrate while having a blast. And also…dancing. We want lots of dancing.

And that, Internet, is the awesome duo that is Hillary and Dan.  Between me and you, I think Hillary has the most beautiful eyes ever.  Incidentally, Dan’s band, Ashes to Embers, is my new favorite band.  As I slog through this backlog of editing, Ashes to Embers is keeping me going.  Not only that, but the first time I cranked up the album in my studio, it magnetically drew all the teenagers in the house into the room.  Then, when I told them how I’d spent the afternoon with the lead singer and his smokin’ hot babe, I was instantly cool.  Well, for a minute anyway.  That’s nothing to sneeze at.

Thanks Hillary and Dan for giving me the best tour of Baltimore ever.  I had the most fun hanging out with you guys, and then again editing your photos.  I think I may have hurt myself laughing as I went through your photos and relived the afternoon.  I can’t wait for your epic wedding.  It’s gonna be amazing.
