Barbara and Darryl | Engagement Session in Historic Downtown Norcross

Today I am introducing you to Barbara and Darryl, who are one of the funnest couples I’ve ever photographed.  They have a great story, which I’ll let them tell you about, but you should know that when I asked them if they always laughed so much when they were together, they both said in unison, “YES!”  And now, here’s Barbara to tell you a little bit about their story.

How did you meet?

“Darryl and I first met back in 1989 when I was 19 and he was 24 on the campus of Clark Atlanta University. We dated for about 14 months (very seriously–there was talk of marriage and babies) but we were young (and dumb) and it didn’t work out and we broke up and went our separate ways (me to Minneapolis, MN where I’m from and he stayed around Atlanta for several years before moving back to Charleston, SC where he’s from). Fast forward 20 years when Darryl was coming to Atlanta for a conference: he said that whenever he thought of Atlanta, he always thought of me and wondered what I was doing and how I was. As it turns out, I was actually living in Atlanta and we got together for dinner while he was in town and the rest, as they say, is history.”

What was dating like?

“Dating was a bit of a challenge at first because we live in two separate cities–he in Charleston, SC and me here in the Atlanta area. As things got serious, we settled into a schedule that allows us to never have more than two weeks apart. When we’re together, we have so much fun and truly appreciate that time together; and when we’re apart, for the last two plus years, we talk every night at 9:00 on the phone to keep in touch.”

Describe your proposal.

“He proposed to me, quite out of the blue, in downtown, historic Duluth after dinner on May 23, 2013. We were sitting on a swing on the Green and he just turned to me, got down on one knee and popped the question. What was so cool is that someone was videotapping it on their iPhone and caught 46 seconds of it and later sent it to us!”

How would you describe your relationship?

“This is the best relationship we’ve ever been in and open and honest communication is the cornerstone of it. We can be ourselves with each other and we are not afraid to talk about any and all kinds of topics no matter what it is.”

What’s your wedding going to be like?

“We want our wedding to be simple, casual but elegant, and fun! We’re going to have a Sunday morning ceremony on Folly Beach outside of Charleston in May and we can’t wait!”

Thank you Barbara and Darryl for making me laugh all morning, and for choosing to have me be a part of this amazing part of your lives.  I’m really excited to photograph your wedding next spring.
