Flaherty’s Family Farm | Scarborough Maine Wedding | Sarah and Josh

Flaherty's Family Farm | Scarborough Maine Wedding | Sarah and Josh-1-2

“Will you give me yourself? Will you come travel with me? Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?” -Walt Whitman

Today I want to tell you a story about a girl who loves a boy more than shrimp tacos, and that’s a lot. This is Sarah and Josh, who were married at Flaherty’s Family Farm in Scarborough, Maine. And they are amazing. And their family and friends are amazing too. Anyone who can play Cards Against Humanity with their grandparents has something pretty special going on. However, there’s more to them than Cards Against Humanity and bacon and whiskey for breakfast. Sarah and Josh are the kind of people who are going to make the world better. And they’re surrounded by lots of people who are doing the same thing.

Here’s what they said when I asked them how they met. “Sarah & Josh met at a domestic abuse shelter in Tijuana, Mexico. Josh was on a mission trip with his church (which included multiple members of his family) and Sarah was just on a trip to visit the shelter, which is called Deborah’s House and is like a second home to Sarah. The shelter is facilitated by missionaries Ray and Adalia Schellinger Gutierrez (Ray will be officiating the wedding). That week in Mexico, everyone got food poisoning. It was really romantic. At the time, Josh lived in Oregon and Sarah in Boston. A few months later, Josh moved to Boston. The rest is history!”

But my favorite part of their story is how they got engaged. “Josh and I were on vacation in central Oregon with his family. We had planned a picnic at one of his favorite spots, Sparks Lake, but on our way there had a few too many tasters at the Naked Winery (nothing awkward about being there with your boyfriend and his mom, nope). So, we postponed the trip to the next day. That day, we headed up to the lake and had a picnic lunch and were relaxing on the shore and Josh decided he wanted to go for a walk in the woods around the lake. We went together and I was telling him that this forest is enchanted. He asked me to tell him stories about the enchanted forest, so I began telling him that on the new moon in October, 4700 fairies fill the forest. When it’s not the new moon, they live in the lava flow of the mountain. Josh started to cry, and I thought he was upset about the fairies, so I reassured him that the magical powers that the fairies have allows them to live safely in the lava. Then he asked me to marry him. I asked if this was real. “Really really? Like, really really?” It was real.”
